What is Cremation?
Cremation is the process of reducing the deceased remains to fragments of bone using high heat and flame. The cremains can then be buried, scattered, or displayed in an urn or other ornate receptacle. Cremation may serve as a funeral or post-funeral rite that is an alternative to the interment of an intact body in a casket.
Cremated remains, which do not constitute a health risk, may be buried or interred in memorial sites or cemeteries, or they may be legally retained by relatives and dispersed in various ways.
In many countries, cremation is usually done in a crematorium, but other countries prefer different methods, such as open-air cremation in India and in Nepal.
Cost-effective and accepted by most non-orthodox religions, cremation is increasingly becoming a preferred alternative to traditional interment.

In response to the trend of rising cremation rates, St. Michael Cemetery established a new state-of-the-art crematory facility with four retorts in 2010. Cremation must be carried out in a facility approved by the Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP). The only DEP tested facility of it's kind in Massachusetts, our crematory is both energy efficient and environmentally friendly, and should the family wish, a viewing room is available to bear witness.

Three Columbariums are located throughout the grounds with niches for urns to be displayed; The Garden Columbarium in the second cemetery, the Garden of Peace and Remembrance in the fourth cemetery, and the Chapel Columbarium in the Resurrection Chapel Mausoleum.
